Metal finishing for Dayton and Columbus manufacturers
Dayton is about an hour up I-75 and Columbus about two hours out I-71. Both are close enough that parts can go out and come back inside the same week without freight dominating the quote.
These are two different manufacturing economies joined by I-70. Dayton has one of the densest precision machining bases in Ohio, shaped over decades by aerospace and defence work, and it runs heavily to close-tolerance machined parts in stainless and alloy steel. Columbus is dominated by vehicle assembly and its Tier 1 and Tier 2 supply base around Marysville and East Liberty, together with a very large distribution sector. The first sends out machined parts that must not lose a dimension. The second sends out stampings and hardware in production volumes.
The drive from Este Avenue
I-75 north to Dayton, I-71 northeast to Columbus, with I-70 linking the two.
| From the plant to | Distance | Drive |
|---|---|---|
| Middletown and Monroe | about 30 mi | about 40 min |
| Dayton | about 50 mi | about 1 hr |
| Springfield | about 75 mi | about 1 hr 20 |
| Marysville and Union County | about 95 mi | about 1 hr 40 |
| Columbus | about 107 mi | about 1 hr 45 |
Distances are approximate road mileage from 6350 Este Ave, Cincinnati, and drive times assume ordinary traffic.
What this market usually needs
A different industry mix asks for a different process mix. These are the three that come up most often here, out of the six on site.
Passivation
Machined stainless needs free iron removed before it leaves, and MFI passivates to ASTM A967 practice with the documentation the print calls for.
Learn moreDeburring and Mechanical Polishing
Controlled dimensional deburring on close-tolerance machined parts, where an edge break has a number on it and the feature it sits on cannot move.
Learn moreElectro Zinc Plating
Barrel and rack zinc for the stamping and hardware volumes that come out of the Columbus supply base.
Learn moreAll six processes run on one site, so a part needing several of them is quoted and scheduled as a single job. See every service.
Freight, and whether the trip is worth it
An hour to Dayton and under two to Columbus puts both inside a same-week round trip. For a Dayton shop that usually means parts sent early in the week are back in it. The arithmetic that matters at this range is not the mileage, it is how many separate vendors a part would otherwise visit. A machined stainless part that needs washing, deburring and passivating is one shipment here and three somewhere else.
Transit. Roughly one hour to Dayton and under two hours to Columbus, each way. Lead time itself depends on the process and the lot size, so MFI quotes it per job rather than publishing one figure. Rush and hot orders are accommodated.
Questions from this market
Yes. MFI holds ISO 9001:2015 registration and passivates to the practice the print calls for. Send the specification with the part and the required documentation is quoted with the work.
Controlled dimensional deburring is the point of the process: material comes off the edge without the feature moving. Send the print with the edge break called out and MFI will confirm the process against it before the lot runs.
Yes. Parts washing removes coolant, drawing compound and shop oils ahead of assembly, plating or packing, and MFI cleans returnable dunnage alongside the parts delivered in it.
